Behavior guide
A bite makes more sense when you look at what was happening just before it. The same action can come from overstimulation, play, restraint, redirected arousal, feeling crowded around space or resources, or a health change.
Quick answer
A gentle bite can have more than one explanation, and a bite that seems random often has a clue in the seconds before it. Think about whether you were petting your cat, moving a hand or foot, holding them, blocking an exit, or standing near another trigger. Then choose the closest situation below.
Do not assume it was affection or aggression. Stop contact and think about the pressure, your cat’s body tension, and what happened immediately afterward. If licking was part of the same interaction, use the lick-and-bite sequence guide.
Think back over the previous ten seconds. Touch, fast movement, restraint, an animal outside the window, a loud sound, food, space, or another pet may reveal the trigger.
If the biting is new, getting worse, looks painful, or happens when you touch one area, check the health guide. If skin broke, start with wound care.
Find the relevant situation
Touch continued after your cat’s tolerance began to change.
Movement triggered stalking, chasing, pouncing, or grabbing.
The cat may have felt unstable, restricted, uncomfortable, or unable to leave.
An animal outside the window, a loud sound, an unfamiliar smell, or a conflict may have put your cat on high alert before the bite.
Access, distance, exits, and competition may have shaped the response.
Pain, illness, sensory change, or mobility problems can alter tolerance.
Start with wound care before trying to understand the behavior.

Is this my situation?
The bite happened during a recognizable situation: petting, play, handling, a trigger, pressure around space, or a new health boundary.
Do first
Move away calmly, give the cat space, and do not repeat the same touch or handling to test the reaction.
Then
Choose the card that matches what happened immediately before the bite. More than one may apply, but start with the clearest one.
Choose another guide if
Start with wound care if skin broke. Check the health guide if the biting is new, getting worse, or linked to one body area.
Brief body-language clues
The cat looks at the hand, turns away, or changes position.
The tail speeds up, strikes a surface, or becomes tense.
Ear position changes as attention or discomfort rises.
A brief freeze can come before a rapid bite or escape.
Try one small change
Stop while your cat is still comfortable, then let the cat decide whether to return. This is often clearer and safer than testing how much more contact the cat will tolerate.
Growling, moving away, turning the head, or using a paw gives useful information. Punishing those signals can make future behavior harder to read.
Check the health guide if the biting is new, getting worse, linked to one body area, or paired with changes in appetite, mobility, grooming, sleep, litter-box use, or social behavior.
